Silent Refuse Truck

Challenges

Refuse collection is a vital heavy transport in city centers, but it is causing noise, congestion and emissions on an area with dense population. The refuse collection work creates noise, when pulling the refuse containers, especially empty ones, on uneven pavements, when emptying the container into the refuse collector, when packing the load tight into the collector container. Diesel engine driven trucks create also noise and emissions to the environment during the driving and the refuse collection work. These affects on the well-being and the air quality during the refuse collection work and in the city environment.

Goals

The goal of the project is to develop the most silent refuse truck in the world. The goal is reached using an full electric truck chassis equipped with an electric driven refuse collector, and a more silent collection process. With the help of the developed refuse truck and optimized refuse collection process the total energy consumption and emissions of the refuse collection will be decreased. This means also decreased costs of refuse collection. The developed refuse truck will be tested during a pilot operation in Helsinki city center. The electric truck uses fast charging station in Hakaniemi. The pilot period lasts for 18 months covering two winters. This pilot operation gives information of the refuse collection process using electrically powered vehicles in real operation and in varying climate conditions.

Hiljainen jäteauto Helsingin keskustaan ensi vuonna – täyssähköinen auto vähentää myös pakokaasujen määrää

“Keskeisiä tavoitteita ovat sekä jätteenkeräyksen meluhaitan että lähipäästöjen, kuten pakokaasun ja pienhiukkasten, minimointi. Alustavien selvitysten mukaan jäteautojen meluhaittaa ja lähipäästöjä on mahdollista vähentää parhaiten siirtymällä täyssähköisiin jäteautoihin”, kuvailee hankepäällikkö.
