Challenges

Intelligent data platforms and connectivity are needed to enable information exchange between different business sectors and systems.

5G has opened new communication opportunities for industrial systems. The challenge is to fully exploit data platform and 5G technology to develop cost-efficient and scalable data services across business domains.

Goals

Smart Otaniemi platform aims at creating access to data from different sources to enable development of new types of aggregated services and applications for energy, building and communication market sectors.

Concrete goals include: Enabling reliable and real-time connectivity and data sharing. Collecting and aggregating monitoring data from different industry sectors. Ensuring data availability and reliability when the amount of data increases. Promoting 5G services for industrial and commercial users.

Results

The use case specification work focused on the following vertical use cases:

Inspection drone: The use case focuses on deploying drones for remote inspection of facilities used for flexible energy production, consumption and storage.

Remote monitoring of a self-sustained pico-eNodeB: The target is to enable remote monitoring of the photovoltaic (PV) system with a battery and to provide an outage-free power supply to the communication subsystem to make it energy self-sufficient.

Smart EV charging: The use case is to demonstrate the new EV charging services to be deployed at work and home. The focus is on interactions between the consumer, charging point, aggregators and TSO to support more detailed metering, demand response and load balancing services.

Remote monitoring of heating, cooling and air conditioning (HVAC): The target is to design and implement a real-time multi-point metering system to monitor energy consumption of smart cooling and air conditioning systems in buildings.
